Ihm stehen Widersacher wie der Brokmanne Keno Hylmerisna und der Erzbischof Otto I. von Bremen gegenüber, denn auch die Kirche drängt zu säkularer Macht. Magnus nimmt den Kampf auf, er macht sich zum Sprecher derer, die nicht bereit sind, ihre seit langem bewahrte Freiheit nun an eigene Bauernfürsten zu verlieren.
