Die Umweltprobleme haben eine globale size angenommen und berauben als solche die Menschen langfristig ihrer Lebensgrundlage, verursachen globale Schäden in nicht messbaren finanziellen Dimensionen, haben bereits zu Konflikten um knappe Ressourcen geführt und werden auch zukünftig weltweit weitere Konflikte schaffen, die unsere Welt nicht sicherer machen.
Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, wie zukunftsfähig die aktuellen Globalisierungsprozesse sind, und wie die Globalisierung zukunftsfähig gestaltet werden kann. Deshalb hat im Hinblick auf die Zukunftsfähigkeit die Idee einer „nachhaltigen Entwicklung“ in den letzten Jahren zunehmende Beachtung gefunden. Ihr Ziel ist nämlich die „langfristige Sicherung der natürlichen Lebensgrundlagen, wirtschaftliche Stabilität und soziale Verträglichkeit“ miteinander zu vereinbaren (Petschow 1998).
Vor diesem Hintergrund ist das Ziel dieser Arbeit nun herauszufinden, ob nachhaltige Entwicklung im Umweltbereich und ökonomische Globalisierung überhaupt vereinbar sind. Es soll untersucht werden, ob und wenn ja inwieweit die Ideen einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung in der gegenwärtigen Globalisierung berücksichtigt werden.
Es sollen zunächst das Phänomen der Globalisierung sowie deren Auswirkungen speziell auf die Umwelt (Kapitel 2) und das Konzept einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung sowie deren bisherige Verwirklichung auf internationaler Ebene getrennt dargestellt werden (Kapitel 3). In einem weiteren Teil wir untersucht, inwieweit ökologische Nachhaltigkeitsaspekte in der wirtschaftlichen Globalisierung berücksichtigt werden (Kapitel 4). Dabei gilt es, sich insbesondere mit den Regeln der Welthandelsorganisation bzw. des Allgemeinen Zoll- und Handelsabkommen auseinander zu setzen. In Kapitel five werden schließlich die Handlungsspielräume einer nationalen und internationalen Politik der ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit unter den Bedingungen einer sich globalisierenden Ökonomie aufgezeigt und Kapitel 6 wird abschließend auf die Bildungs- und Unterrichtsrelevanz dieses Themas im Biologieunterricht eingehen.
