But he should resolve in advance neither to talk nor write of what he sees. St. Peter does not smile on digressions, even though they be duck stories. From the every-day viewpoint, Stinking Lake is a 2,000-acre pond at the head of the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico. It has 15 miles of curly, crimpy shoreline, and lots of tules. From the real viewpoint, Stinking Lake is paradise. Part of it is pretty grassy shores with deep tule bays; part of it is the setting of pine-covered hills and blue mountain sky.

The clear streams gurgled between uneroded banks, and no raw, soil-robbing gullies marred the canyons. Forests and fire, predators and prey coexisted in a natural harmony that he instinctively knew should be the norm. Page 14 Leopold was profoundly moved by what he saw in Mexico. He was also deeply troubled. He now knew how far down from the pinnacle of land health the forestlands of Arizona and New Mexico had fallen under the management of modern man. He now knew how terribly difficult it was to tread lightly upon the earth.

Managing the Carson was a challenge. Unlike the thinly settled Apache National Forest, northern New Mexico had long been overgrazed by sheep and cattle. The Carson's largely Hispanic stockmen had used the land for generations, were set in their ways, and were naturally suspicious of the Forest Service's intentions. For the first time in his young career, Leopold was faced with solving the problems of unhealthy landovergrazed meadows, erosion gullies, and a lack of game. But he was still young enough to believe that these problems could be rectified through hard work and the application of standard remedies.
