FAQ

Do you have another question? Call Jonathan Brower at 818-707-4557 to find the answer.

I have illnesses and pains with no medical basis. I am told they are psychological. Can you help me?

Yes! When people are afraid of their feelings and impulses and become anxious and/or depressed, they can unconsciously attack themselves with physical pain and discomfort rather than be aware of toward whom they have strong feelings and impulses. Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy allows us to get to the true cause of your physical and emotional suffering.

I have anxiety and depression. Can you help me with both?

Yes, most definitely! It is common for people with anxiety to have depression. People with anxiety disorders are afraid of feelings and impulses such as anger. Depression de-energizes your anger. In the therapy, we get to the root cause of your depression and anxiety. The two often go hand-in-hand.

Are panic attacks different than regular anxiety?

Panic attacks are the extreme manifestation of anxiety. They are part of the package of anxiety disorders. When people have panic attacks, their tolerance for experiencing their powerful emotions is exceedingly low. Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy looks at the triggers for the attack and gets to feelings that preceded the panic attack.

What are feelings and impulses?

Emotions like anger are a part of our human experience. When you are angry, there is a physiological arousal in your body. You feel a hot rush of adrenaline. You have a feeling of power in your muscles. You might even be aware of having an impulse in the form of a physical attack, such as a great desire to punch someone in the nose or elsewhere. Please understand that awareness of wanting to punch someone is not the same as the actual act of punching. It is perfectly acceptable to be aware of your impulses in fantasy and to know that you would not act them out in reality.

How long are the sessions after the first one?

After the first three-hour session, the following sessions normally range from ninety minutes to three hours. My goal is to help you get to the core of your problems so you can find the answers you are looking for and end your suffering as quickly as possible.

Why is the first session three hours?

Three hours gives you time to become aware of the barriers you use to hide your feelings and symptoms of anxiety and depression. You will likely experience breakthroughs to your unconscious. By the end of the session you will have a clearer understanding of what causes your anxiety and feel like there is a possible solution to defeat your anxiety.

How can you help me when other therapies have failed me?

Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy is highly efficient and exceedingly focused. My process systematically points out the walls you use to keep from facing and dealing with the emotions that your anxiety blocks for you.

Our focus helps you pay attention to your emotional feelings, the symptoms of your anxiety, and the walls you unconsciously put up to maintain your suffering. Together we will closely monitor your words and body. Through conscious awareness, you will begin to break down your defenses so you may face your true feelings and be freed from anxiety and depression.
